Amsterdam & St Paul Islands are two volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean. The only way to visit the islands is on the French research vessel Marion Dufresne II which services the Martin-de-Viviès research station on Amsterdam Island which is the seasonal home to about thirty researchers and staff studying biology, meteorology, and geomagnetics. The island is roughly equidistant to the land masses of Madagascar, Australia, and Antarctica
